STORY OF THE TRACKS

The original of “Natural High”, a beautiful downtempo latin song, was sent to the Sumo-guys by Gavin Smith, then at Mr Bongo. While they were time-stretching the sound files as much as possible, they found among the guitar files this really catchy afro hook. It’s not in the original as the guitar player was just fooling around, but they decided to build the whole remix around it.

You can say this was the first track that Sumo made with afro flavoured beats. And a lot of people liked it. Some people liked it so much they borrowed two bars from it! Anyway, this song made Sumo a name to those djs outside th ehouse-circus. For example, Dimitri from Paris included it on his Defected compilation.

Two years later when Christian Larsson at Slip’n’Slide heard Sumo remix of “Spirit of drums”, another job they did for Gavin Smith, he picked up the phone and ordered a rebounce of Blaze’s classic “My Beat”. The idea of the rebounce was perfectly clear from the start – a “beat work out”. Palmer Brown’s preaching lyrics should be taken seriously, no doubt.

Starting out with the arrangement, Sumo's favourite percussionist Thomas Eby played an imprted role working out the different rhythm breakdowns. When the foundation of beats and bass was layed down it was time to add the afro flavours, the species, the things that make a rebounce a rebounce and not a remix. Starting out with the horns, Combo recorded 23 sax-riffs while was out for lunch. Picking the right one was not as easy as picking a guitar player. The talented Andreas Öberg, who is a regular musician at Heya Studios, spen less than 20 minutes on the song, and almost everything recorded is to be found on either of the versions.

So here we are with two gems taken from Sumo's remix album “Rebounces”. Hope you’ll like them.
